  • Which organisations may require my National Insurance number?

  • Do I need a National Insurance Number?

    A National Insurance number is not essential for a small number of employers. However, if you wish to start working or to study, or would like to start a business in the UK then a National insurance number is vital. Without a NI number, you will be unable to claim benefits.

  • Can I apply from overseas?

    In order to apply for a NI Number, you must hold a residency in the UK. By using the NiNo Application service our specially trained staff will arrange your EOI (Evidence of Identity) interview before you arrive in the U.K. (you must be able to provide us with a valid U.K address where you will be living when you arrive in the UK. you to come to an interview where you’ll be asked about your circumstances and why you need a National Insurance number. You will be informed which documents to bring with you to prove your identity, such as, a valid UK or foreign passport or foreign identity card, residence permit card including bio-metric immigration residency documents, birth or adoption certificate, marriage or civil partnership certificate and driving licence, proof of UK address. Please try and bring as many original ‘identity documents’ (not photocopies) to your interview.

  • Is it compulsory to attend an Evidence of Identity interview?

    All people entering the UK with the intention of working and taking residency including EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, providing they have a Home Office Visa confirming they have the legal right to work in the U.K will need to book a NINO appointment.

  • How long will it take to receive my National Insurance number?

    It can take up to six weeks. Our service is that we help you with the various form, we vet your forms before submission and we pre-arrange your Evidence of Identity interview. After the interview, you will wait up to 6 weeks for your National Insurance Number (NINO) to arrive in the mail, although in certain circumstances this can be quicker.

  • Can I be hired and receive an income without a NI Number?

    By law, it is possible to work in the UK without a NI number, with certain employers this should not prevent you from being employed or paid. You must, however, have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom. Your bank, Department for Work and Pensions, your local council, student loans office and employers will all request your NI number. Should your employer insists on having a NI Number before hiring, you will either be turned down for work unless he will accept that you are in the process of acquiring your NI number. You can apply directly to the DWP or contact Job Centre Plus for a NI Number where there is no fee payable.
