National Insurance number

  • Which organisations may require my National Insurance number?

The list below is representative of organisations that may ask for your National Insurance number:

    • Department for Work and Pensions
    • Prospective employers
    • HM Revenue & Customs
    • Jobcentre Plus
    • Pension, Disability and Carers Service
    • Local council
    • Banks and Building societies
  • Do I need a National Insurance Number?

A National Insurance number is essential for a small number of employees. However, if you wish to start working or to study, or would like to start a business in the UK then a National insurance number is vital. Without a NI number, you will be unable to claim benefits.

  • Can I apply from overseas?

To apply for a UK National Insurance (NI) number, you must have a valid UK address. Our service helps arrange your Evidence of Identity (EOI) interview before you arrive. At the interview, you’ll need original identity documents (e.g., passport, residency permit, birth certificate, proof of UK address) and must explain why you need an NI number. Bring as many original documents as possible—no photocopies.

  • Is it compulsory to attend an Evidence of Identity interview?

Anyone moving to the UK to work and live—including EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals—must apply for a National Insurance (NI) number if they have a valid UK work visa. An interview may be required, but not always, depending on individual circumstances.

  • How long will it take to receive my National Insurance number?

It can take up to six weeks. Our service is that we help you with the various form, we vet your forms before submission and we pre-arrange your Evidence of Identity interview. After the interview, you will wait up to 6 weeks for your National Insurance Number (NINO) to arrive in the mail, although in certain circumstances this can be quicker.

  • Can I be hired and receive an income without a NI Number?

You can legally work in the UK without a National Insurance (NI) number if you have the right to work, but employers, banks, and government agencies will eventually request it. Some employers may refuse to hire you without one unless you prove you're applying.

You can apply for an NI number for free through the DWP or Job Centre Plus. NINO Application is a private service that assists with the process but is not affiliated with the UK government. For official applications, visit gov.uk.
